Lisa Schalk is this year’s recipient of the Rotary Global Grant Scholarship. Lisa has spent the past ten of her twenty-one years of nursing working as a Critical Care High Risk Obstetrical Nurse Specialist at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco.

Lisa will be attending the University of York in England starting this September. Lisa will be studying for her Master in International Public Health, with an emphasis on Maternal/Fetal Well-Being. Lisa’s goal following graduation is to work for the World Health Organization (WHO), where her primary focus is on Maternal Health, especially among the high-risk pregnant populations of lower income countries.

Lisa enjoys the teaching and education given to both the patients and families who are dealing with a non-communicable obstetrical disease. She realizes the need for educational assistance for local health care workers in lower income countries is a priority to prevent and treat complications that may develop during pregnancy, as well as having facilities in close proximity for women to receive skilled medical care.

Lisa enjoys travelling, running, biking, hiking, playing piano, and reading. She is the mother of two young boys, ages six and eight, who will be accompanying her to England this fall.

Lisa expresses her gratitude to the Rotary Foundation for enabling her to pursue her dream of attending the University of York to study Public Health. She is honored and privileged to have been chosen to receive the Global Grant Scholarship.
