Within the district of Makiso adjacent to Kampala is Kabojja Village and the CIDI Technology Transfer Center. The Rotary Club of Kampala Nsambya has long been involved in the establishment of CIDI, which trains youth the skills to combat unemployment.

The village is comprised of 300 families, with 105 headed by women, and 195 headed by men. The CIDI center trains SO youths at any given time comprised of 30 girls and 20 boys with 8 technical staff. Total number of people served is 1250, and an estimated 4000 more in surrounding communities who need a source for safe drinking water.

The main community well is highly contaminated with E.coli bacteria as recently confirmed in the Community Assessment. Cost of purified water, bottled in 18.9L containers and sold throughout Kampala is $2.78. This is largely out of reach for the poor. The SunSpring-based water plant will produce purified water from a new borehole, bottled in these reusable family-sized containers. The community water enterprise will sell the water bottles for around $1. If just one quarter of the plant's capacity is sold daily, or 250 bottles at $1, an annual revenue of over $90,000 is available exclusively for their essential social services.

The Rotary Club of Kampala Nsambya will be providing the water enterprise oversight guidance that includes mentorship on how to conduct a commercial enterprise, monitoring of proper use and maintenance of all equipment and microfinance for small essential expenditures as the operations require. A strong MOU will be developed to be signed by all parties with a list of covenants.

H20penDoors Water Purification Enterprises

H2OpenDoors is a project of Rotary clubs worldwide with a Donor Advised Fund at The Rotary Foundation. With 8 years of experience creating over 33 installations in 11 countries, the project has also developed several enterprises earning significant revenue for their communities' essential social services.

Total Estimate cost to create this facility is $98,000. The generalized breakdown of cost distributes to two primary vendors:
Davis & Shirtliff, Uganda: $69,000 for borehole, solarized power supply, submersible pump, tanks and pipework.
Innovative Water Technologies, USA: $29,000 for landed cost of SunSpring, bottle sanitizer and essential kits for purification.

The H2OpenDoors Expedition to Uganda takes place between July 8-21, 2021. There are 40 people registered to come on this adventure, that includes this water installation, along with performing eyeglass clinics for 1000, and installing RACHEL computer labs. Therefore, here is a timetable for expenditure of funds:

January2021:
Final Grant approval.
Continued appeals for DDF funding from several Districts.

February 2021:
Funding available and submitted to a separate account of the Rotary Foundation of Peninsula Starlight (the Sponsor Club).
$40,000 sent to Davis & Shirtliff for initial site work, borehole.

March 2021:
Additional $29,000 for finish work by Davis & Shirtliff / $29,000 to IWT for SunSpring.

May 2021:
SunSpring to ship to Kampala.

July 2021:
Arrival of the H2OpenDoors team to perform configuration and other projects, including training of village technicians and water enterprise stakeholders of initial stages of sales.

During July, intensive work between the members of the Rotary Club of Kampala Nsambya and the H2OpenDoors team will commence on several fronts. Members of the Expedition will be contributing funds, outside of this grant, that will provide 1000 reusable polycarbonate bottles along with laptops for RACHEL computer labs. Classes in sales, marketing and maintenance will take place on July 9 and 10, followed by a celebration with the village on our successful installation and project work, opening a new chapter in the lives of the community.
