Where People Belong, Rotary Grows
Recruitment brings people through our doors. Retention keeps them engaged. A great club experience makes them proud to call themselves Rotarians.
After nearly 20 years of building a fitness community, I've learned that healthy organizations don't grow simply by recruiting new members. They grow because people choose to stay.
Every August we celebrate Membership and New Club Development Month, reminding us that recruitment and retention are both essential. But they're only part of the story.
People don't stay because of the newest equipment. They stay because they're welcomed, encouraged, build friendships, and know someone cares when they're not there. Most importantly, they feel they belong.
What I found especially interesting is that Rotary International's research reaches the same conclusion. Members stay because of the overall club experience—friendships, meaningful service, trusted leadership, and a sense of belonging. Those experiences turn members into Rotary's greatest ambassadors.
That's why recruitment, retention, strong leadership, and a positive club experience all work together. Healthy clubs invest in all four. When we do, members choose to stay, grow as leaders, and proudly invite others to experience Rotary.
